Aerialtronics announces renewed Pensar AI Camera Solution
Three years ago, Aerialtronics introduced the world’s first dual spectrum camera managed by an AI system. The Pensar System is based around three main components, a Sony day camera, a FLIR camera, a Nvidia GPU and our own proprietary software suite. The idea behind the Pensar system is to create a “future proof” modular system that can be quickly and efficiently adapted to any mission parameters. Software and hardware modularity is the main strength of the Pensar System.
Pensar incorporates an embedded Sony camera. This extremely sensitive camera uses Sony’s patented Starvis and Exmor R technology. These two technologies set this instrument apart from other Sony products and the closest competitor. Exmor R is a Sony sensor with enhanced sensitivity and reduced noise. Starvis is specifically designed for surveillance cameras and is able to create high quality images from visible light down to near infrared.
The features include: full HD, fast lens with 30x optical zoom, image stabilization, stablezoom technology, 2D/3D noise reduction (five levels, especially for low light) , clear vision around the clock to as low as 0.35lx, auto day to night mode, spherical privacy zone masking, easy connection to other electronics, and many other features that can be activated as the case may be with each client (mirror image, color enhancement, motion detection/alarm, picture freeze, temperature readouts, slow AE response, electronic shutter/slow shutter, title display, camera mode display).

To cover the IR range of the spectrum, we chose the Boson series of products from FLIR since it is the ideal compromise between size and performance. The Boson is available in 2 resolutions (640×512 and 320×256) and FLIR also announced a radiometric version to be introduced to the market in future. The Boson was specifically designed for applications that require portability and offers many integration advantages that allow us to include this technology in the Pensar.
The Boson® thermal camera cores set a new standard for size, weight, power, and performance. Its 12µm pitch vanadium oxide (VOx) uncooled detector, comes in two resolutions — 640×512 or 320×256 — and it’s available with lots of different lenses, so you’re sure to find a configuration that’s just right for your next project. Boson’s advanced image processing, video analytics, peripheral sensor drivers, and industry-standard communication interfaces are fully integrated into the Pensar camera.
The heart of the Pensar is a powerful Nvidia Jetson TX2 GPU whose job it is to process the images from the day and IR cameras. Through the use of powerful deep learning neural networks, the Pensar is able to expedite many different types of mission profiles such as face recognition, object tracking, license plate identification, industrial inspections (for example, rust and damage to infrastructure), aerial surveying and security surveillance.
Military and Law Enforcement missions include situational awareness and crowd surveillance. Pensar can also be placed within the framework of a smart city’s intelligent transportation system.
